As you head out to your favorite fishing hole, a pole and cooler might seem enough for a day on the water – but a smart boater knows it’s about more than just the basics. Make every fishing trip memorable, fun and hassle-free with these 10 must-have boat accessories.
First-aid kit. Sometimes, accidents can happen – especially when a flying fish hook is involved. Equip your bass boat with a basic kit or one specifically designed for fishing. Better yet, create your own fishing first aid kit to ensure you have everything you need in the event of a mishap.
Life jacket. This one might seem obvious – life preserves are a must. Not only that, but it’s the law – all states require boats to have properly-fitting, Coast Guard-approved life jackets for every person aboard. Check out your state’s requirements before you cast off.
Tools and spare parts. As fun as it is to “MacGyver” your way out of a situation, having a few tools and spare parts on board can make things a lot easier on you. Take care of quick-fixes by stocking a waterproof toolbox with things like a screw driver, wrench, pliers, knife, electrical tape, duct tape, spare fuses, sheer pins, spark plugs and anything else you need to float your boat.
Motor flush adaptor. This comes in handy when you’re fishing around rivers in the springtime or after heavy rains, because there’s more grass and particles you’re floating through. All that gunk can eventually clog the strainer in the motor, which could cause a lot of damage. Having a motor flush adaptor on hand to back flush the engine and get everything out of the strainer could save you time and money.
Waterproof stowaway case. Keys, wallet, phone, lucky lure – you wouldn’t want to lose these essentials in the deep depths, would you? A waterproof stowaway case is perfect to protect your belongings and make sure they come back with you at the end of the day – even if a fish doesn’t.
Various lengths of rope. Any seasoned fisherman has a tale or two about getting stranded in the middle of a lake. Having a rope to tie to another boat, whether you’re being rescued or doing the rescuing, is a must-have when hitting the water.
Jumper cables. Much like your car, if your starter battery dies, jumper cables can save the day and keep you moving forward. Keep in mind, these are only useful if another boat is around to supply a jump, so maybe have a set of paddles handy as well!
Shallow water anchors. Planning on fishing in shallow water? You’ll want to make sure your boat is equipped with a shallow water anchor to provide a quick and quiet approach to keep your boat stationary.
Cell phone or marine radio. We get it. One of the appeals of boating is the freedom and escape it offers, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Having a cell phone or marine radio is always a good idea to stay connected. Make sure your bass boat is equipped with one or both, and be sure to test the signal every now and then.
Boat insurance. This is an important boat accessory to have with you, even if it’s not visible. Protect your boat with customized coverage to meet all your specific watercraft needs, so you can stay focused on what’s most important – your next catch!
Bonus tip: Things like food, water, sun screen, bug spray and towels are always good to have on board for long days on the water. Keep comfortable, hydrated and well-nourished, so you’ll have a better experience.
When it comes to fishing, it’s always smart to be prepared, if you catch our drift. Now go out there and hook that big one before it gets away!
